I know this is loooooong overdue, but better late than never. I need to share with y’all an amazing product that I have recently embraced in helping me overcome my most persistent less-than-ideal dietary habit: synthetic sports supplements. But, before we get into the bread and butter (fruit and nuts may be a more appropriate metaphor here, but we will get to that shortly) of this post, I feel that it is necessary for me to share a little bit more about myself and my routine.
For those who know me well this will come as no surprise, but I sometimes have a hard time consuming enough energy and maintaining a healthy weight during periods of heavy training. For those who don’t, the fact that I am approaching 6’1, fluctuate between 150-155 pounds and 4.9-5.1% body fat (depending on the day of the week and my hydration) with a metabolism of a teenage jack rabbit (?) may give you a better idea of exactly what I am working with. Please withhold judgment on my appearance because I am about 26.19 miles into running a 2:56 marathon.
Anyways, the considerations listed above and the fact that I exercise multiple times a day means that appropriately timing my energy intake is the best way to prepare my body for the stress I am about to place upon it as well as to help it adequately recover in time for the next effort. This means that what I do in between my anchor meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is what can make or break a workout and, ultimately, my success. Enter the synthetic energy bars, gels and protein powders (Powerbar, Clif Shots, etc.) that I have become increasingly dependent upon to provide a quick and reliable source of easily digestible sugar to help top of my energy tank and the protein necessary to repair muscle damage.
However, as my nutritional knowledge and dietary philosophy develop, I have come to believe that engineered foods formulated from artificial substances that contain no real nutritional value have little or no place in a mindful and health promoting diet.
This puts me in quite the pickle. What food is readily available that I can eat in the hours leading up to and during grueling attempts at endurance greatness?
